David Lawrence - Second Generation
Occupation: Project Manager

Bio: Second Generations supplies furniture and electrical items at low cost mainly to people on reduced incomes, to enable them to do this, they collect these items from residents of Thurrock, refurbish, repair and test for safety and suitability. " Dedicated to having a positive influence on the environment along with alleviating financial hardship and providing training and volunteering for all"
Requested Services: We are always grateful and value the work of our volunteers without which we could not operate. If you would like to get involved with the charity whether it’s for a whole day or as little as two hours per week, we are always looking for volunteers to do all types of things it could be helping crew the van, refurbishing or cleaning the furniture in the shop helping our customer or with the administration, you may even have a skill that we would find useful and you would be willing to pass this on to someone else The scheme contributes towards recycling in Thurrock by encouraging the re-use of furniture, domestic appliances, bikes and large toys, and household items, which would otherwise go into landfill sites. Environment and Landfill Traditionally - and to a much greater extent than most other European nations - the UK has tipped much of its rubbish into landfills. Those days are coming to an end. For one thing, the country is simply running out of large holes in the ground into which rubbish can be dumped. Secondly, cutting back on using landfills means creating less methane from the rotting rubbish in them. Methane is a 'greenhouse gas' more than 20 times as powerful as carbon dioxide in raising the planet's temperature. The cost to the local tax payer will increase as, the Government introduced a Landfill Tax, which levies a charge on every tonne of material dumped into tips. That figure stands at £24 per tonne and is rising at no less than £8 every year. The Government has also set local authorities targets for the reduction of rubbish going to landfill, which if not met will incur a fine of £150 for every tonne over the limit. Working with Thurrock Council waste team, we operate a collection service for large items of bulky waste that can be re-used, at the CA site in Lindford we provide a container where re-useable items can be deposited for collection at a later date.

Grant Maton - Essex Wildlife Trust

Bio: I am a corporate officer for Essex Wildlfie Trust in Thames Gateway. The corporate scheme has been going for 18 years now and has some 490 members ranging from large international companies to small one-person operations. It is my job to look after the existing members in the Essex County and introduce myself to potential new members. One of the main areas that large numbers of organisations are looking at is the shift in the expectations of their clients, customers and government. We are not just a wildlife charity, but we address concerns around landfill, recycling, sustainability, quality, climate change, development, pollution, energy efficiency etc. Essex Wildlife Trust is the county’s leading conservation charity. It has more than 36,000 members, manages and protects over 7,250 acres of land on 87 nature reserves, 1 nature park and runs 7 visitor centres. The aim of Essex Wildlife Trust is to Protect Wildlife for the Future. It is supported financially by members, local businesses and grant making organisations. It is one of the largest of the 47 county wildlife trusts that work together throughout the British Isles as The Wildlife Trusts.
Requested Services: Joining the corporate scheme offers companies a number of different benefits. Some of the ways that membership has benefited members are outlined below. Tilbury Power Station putting an article on membership in their CSR brochure, South East Essex College are using the membership alongside their Environmental & Animal courses. Southend Airport use the EWT corporate logo within their ‘A future Southend Airport Serving the Thames Gateway’ information sheet.
